iPhone Hacked?

iPhone hype is all over, I have read and wrote a few articles about iPhone lately from the announcement to the release we can say that iPhone and Apple had lived up to its hype. In this article I will enumerate “iPhone Hacked” related stories, which is generating public awareness from the time of iPhone release date. Here are a few stories that caught my attention:

iPhone Independence
This blog claims that he could activate the iPod + WiFi capability of iPhone without the phone functionality of a unactivated iPhone. It means you can use your iPhone as iPod and a Wi-Fi device, without paying for AT&T’s two-year service plan. Jon Lech Johansen the DRM-hacking Norwegian programmer stated that :

Note that this application will not do anything unless you understand the magic numbers as well as add the hosts entry.

Since I iPhone is not yet available on my location, I could not confirm if this hack really works. Wondering what does the numbers mean?

Magic iTunes 7.3.0.54 numbers:
Offset 2048912: 33C0C3
Offset 257074: 28
Offset 257013: 33C9B1

I assume this are hex locations of iTunes 7.3.0.54, you need a hex editor. For example offset 2048912 should be replaced by 33C0C3, and so forth.

Add 127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com
to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

This is fairly simple, it means that instead of contacting albert.apple.com which is the activate server for AT&T and directing it to your local PC. The Phone Activation Server v1.0 is need to be installed along with MS .NET Framework 2.0 to emulate the AT&T server on your local PC.

iPhone New Features

Marco Tempest’s new iPhone features exclusively available at your nearest future. This guy is great, he is a high-tech poet that loves magic. Think of him as David Blane and Nikola Tesla into one. And this video is one of my favorite, just hours after the official release of Apple’s iPhone, Marco performs a magic trick of his new iPhone features.

iPhone FAQ

So are you already eager to line up tomorrow for the big iPhone day? Well I have compiled a list of iPhone Function Related FAQ’s. These FAQ’s has been published on Pogue’s Post section of the New York Times. Anyway, here it is: the ultimate iPhone Frequently Asked Questions list, complete with answers.

Can it be used with anything but Cingular? – No.
Is it an “unlocked phone, so I can use it with a carrier other than Cingular? – No.
Will there be a non-Cingular version? – Not within the first two years.
Can I put my T-Mobile SIM card in it instead of Cingular? – No.
But what if I keep asking? Then will it be available beyond Cingular? – No.
Can it run Mac OS X programs? – No.
Can I add new programs to it? – No. Apple wants to control the look and feel and behavior of every aspect of the phone.
Does it run programs from Palm, Symbian, Windows? – No.
Does it connect to iChat? – No.
Does it have games? – No.
Is it ambidextrous? – No.
Does it have GPS? – No.
Voice recognition? Voice dialing? Voice memos? – No, although this could change by June when the phone ships.
Does it get onto the HSDPA (3G) high-speed Internet network that Cingular has rolled out in a few cities? – No. But Steve Jobs said a later version of the iPhone will — once there’s enough HSDPA coverage in this country to justify it.
Does the Web browser support Flash or Java? – No.
Will it play music over Bluetooth? – Unknown.
Can you change the battery yourself? – No. You’ll have to send the phone in to Apple for battery replacement, just as with the iPods.
Can it open Word and Excel documents? – No. (Steve Jobs says it can open PDF files, though.)
Can you use it one-handed? – Yes, for some functions. But overall, it’s less convenient than on a phone with physical keys.
Can I make a call while driving a car? – Not as easily as on a regular cellphone with programmed speed-dial keys. (Besides–MUST you?)
Does the camera record video? – Not yet. Apple may add this feature by June.
Does it connect to standard iPod accessories like car docks and speaker systems? – Yes!
Does it work overseas? – Yes. It’s a quad-band GSM phone, meaning you can use it in almost any country (for an added fee, of course).
Is there a Verizon version? – NO!!!!
Will they make a non-cellphone version–a widescreen touch iPod? – Nobody knows. Apple doesn’t leak product info until it’s good and ready.
That scrolling through lists thing is glitzy, but what if I have 3,000 names in my address book? – There’s also an alphabet “index tab down the right side of the screen, so you can jump to another spot in the list.
Is there a calendar? – Yes.
Will it sync with Outlook? – No.
What about airplane use? – It has a airplane mode (wireless off), just like any cellphone.
Won’t the screen get smudgy? – It does, but you don’t see it except when the screen is off. The one I played with was pretty streaky, but wiping it on my sleeve cleaned it completely.

Safari on Windows

Apple has launched today a version of their popular browser, Safari 3 Beta for Windows based PCs.

The free program is the latest move by Apple to expand its reach beyond its
Macintosh computers and, at the same time, attract new converts to its products. The upcoming iPhone seeks to be another draw.

Safari is another Trojan horse that introduces an innovation of Apple to the Windows community and entices them to the Mac platform

Creative Strategies technology industry analyst Tim Bajarin said.

The strategy is apparently paying off. Mac sales have grown significantly over the past two years, pushing its slice of the PC market in the United States from 3.5 per cent in 2004 to 4.9 per cent in 2006, market research firm IDC said.

About half of the Macs sold today in Apple’s retail stores are to people new to the Mac platform.

If Safari wins over more users of Windows-based machines, the iPhone - a hybrid mobile phone, iPod and wireless web-enabled mobile device - could also ultimately become more appealing.

Smack Your Mac

The Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS) is Apple’s patent-pending motion-based hardware- and data-protection system used in their notebook computer systems. Apple introduced the system 1 January 2005 in its refreshed PowerBook line, and included it in the iBook line 26 July 2005. Since that time, Apple has included the system in all of their portable systems, now the MacBook and MacBook Pro (as of October 2006).

SmacBook Pro is a hack for Apple’s sudden motion sensor using Fancy Desktop Manager to switch between virtual desktop. Basically you need to add customized code in order to use the Desktop Manager just by tapping your MacBook left and right to switch between desktops. The following codes describes the changes to be made.
