Jarkko Oikarinen - IRC Programmer

Remember your IRC days? Have you ever thought who might have created IRC which is one of the most popular chat servers/client today? 1988 was the birth of a new way of communication called IRC (Internet Relay Chat). The developer of this first internet chat network is Jarkko Oikarinen. Born on August 16, 1967, he first wrote the first client/server application when he was working on University of Olulu, Finland. Oikarinen found inspiration in a chat system known as Bitnet Relay, which operated on the BITNET.

When IRC first started regularly hosting users, Oikarinen asked some friends at Tampere University of Technology and Helsinki University of Technology to start running IRC servers to distribute the load. Other universities joined soon after. Markku Järvinen made the client program more usable by including support for Emacs editor commands, and before long IRC was in use across Finland on the Finnish network FUNET, and then on the Scandinavian network NORDUNET.

Progesterex Hoax

Yesterday, a friend sent me an email containing the following messages:

A woman at a bar on a Saturday night was taken by 5 men, who, according to hospital and police reports, gang raped her before dumping her. Unable to remember the events of the evening, tests later confirmed the repeat rapes, along with traces of Rohypnol in
her blood and Progesterex, essentially a small sterilization pill. The drug is now being used by rapists at parties to rape AND sterilize their victims. Progesterex is available
to vets to sterilize large animals. Progesterex is being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug.

As with Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girl’s drink. The girl can’t remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken place the night before. Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just as easily, is such that the victim doesn’t get pregnant; she won’t conceive from the rape and the rapist needn’t worry about having a paternity test identifying him months later.
The drug’s effects ARE NOT TEMPORARY - They are P*E*R*M*A*N*E*N*T!!!
Progesterex was designed to sterilize horses.. Any female who takes it will NEVER BE ABLE TO CONCEIVE… The weasels can get this drug from anyone who is in the vet school or any university. It’s that easy, and Progesterex is about to break out big on
campuses everywhere. Believe it or not, there are even sites on the Internet telling people how to use it.
Please forward this to everyone you know, especially girls.. Be careful when you’re out and don’t leave your drink unattended.

Please make the effort to forward this on to all you know… Guys, please inform all your female friends and relatives!

Hardest Riddle Available on the Internet

Notpron is a web based riddle website which uses images, sound, google’s adsense search and html code to provide the hardest riddle available on the net today.Basically the focus of the game is to advance to the next level by solving the current level riddle. Hints are available everywhere on the page, you just need to be sharp and fast to recognize clues hidden on each levels. A warning though to be able to advance on level 6 onwards I do believe that some technical knowledge on computer especially on HTML, File handling, and Sound Editing. So far I have cleared level 1-10, and I will tell you it is very hard, from level 5 - 10 the riddles is insanely hard and took me 2-3 hours to clear a single level.

Player Quotes:
“This is possibly the greatest “game” I have ever played in my life!”

“I’m glad I took my time solving each riddle on my own, and didn’t rush to the forums demanding help or looking for cheats.Getting through it all was a torture at times, but very much worth the satisfaction I got from solving each level!”

“Thanks for making me learn how to use my computer!”

“I find it challenging and I finally have put my random computer-geek skills to use.”

“Congratulations for keeping me busy for weeks. Not even the latest games with some killer 3D graphics could get me as excited as NotPr0n. And damn you for making me learn something!”

“Not Pron is greatest thing to come along since sliced bread!”

“You don’t have to be a computer nerd to get through the levels.
Just gotta be a quick learner and more importantly, willing to learn.”

Current Level Completed: 13 (updated 06/15/2007)
(I will update this and will create a spoiler page for levels I already completed)

Safari on Windows

Apple has launched today a version of their popular browser, Safari 3 Beta for Windows based PCs.

The free program is the latest move by Apple to expand its reach beyond its
Macintosh computers and, at the same time, attract new converts to its products. The upcoming iPhone seeks to be another draw.

Safari is another Trojan horse that introduces an innovation of Apple to the Windows community and entices them to the Mac platform

Creative Strategies technology industry analyst Tim Bajarin said.

The strategy is apparently paying off. Mac sales have grown significantly over the past two years, pushing its slice of the PC market in the United States from 3.5 per cent in 2004 to 4.9 per cent in 2006, market research firm IDC said.

About half of the Macs sold today in Apple’s retail stores are to people new to the Mac platform.

If Safari wins over more users of Windows-based machines, the iPhone - a hybrid mobile phone, iPod and wireless web-enabled mobile device - could also ultimately become more appealing.

Independence Day

Today marks the 109th year anniversary of Philippine Independence. And this will be the mark of a new category which I simply call “Philippines”. Above is a Youtube video of Lupang Hinirang (Beloved Land), my country’s national anthem. And below is two of Philippines National Pledges:
Panatang Makabayan (Patriotic Oath)
Current official version
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas, aking lupang sinilangan,
Tahanan ng aking lahi, kinukupkop ako at tinutulungang
Maging malakas, masipag at marangal

Classic Version
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas.
Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan.
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi.
Ako’y kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan,
upang maging malakas, maligaya at kapakipakinabang.

Buong katapatang nanunumpa
Sa watawat ng Pilipinas
At sa bansang kanyang sinasagisag
Na may dangal, katarungan at kalayaan
Na pinakikilos ng sambayanang
Maka-Diyos, Makatao,
Makakalikasan at
Makabansa
